Obituary for Gwendolyn Ross

Gwendolyn Ross
GWENDOLYN CONSTANCE ROSS July 11, 1925 – March 25, 2017
Heartful yet grateful, we announce the passing of our oh-so-beloved Nanum. Gwen left us peacefully with family all around her. As ever, a remarkable example to us all.
Gwen is survived by Don, her four children: Bruce (Judith), Barbara (Warren), Marcia (Sean) and Don (Katharine), her niece and nephews and great-niece: Nancy Thornton, David Thornton (Lesia) and Daria (Curtis), and David Corbin; and her eleven grandchildren: Merryn, Margo and Suzanne; Ryan (Tess), Heather (Justin) and Warren; Stuart, Zachary and Hilary (Chris); and Eric and Jessica (Aley).
Gwen qualified as an RN in her early twenties at Toronto Western Hospital. As a young nurse, she was often alone on night shift with a ward of 60 patients to care for, many of them World War II vets. She loved her job and excelled at it.
Gwen and Don met on an arranged date and he proposed six weeks later. Their loving, fruitful, adventurous marriage thrived for 67 years.
Gwen was a downhill and x-country skier, tennis player, bridge player, cyclist, hiker, co-pilot, sailor and peacemaker. With one widening of her eyes or the way she said your name she could convey more love than you can imagine. She made everyone around her feel well-loved, important, listened-to, and safe. She braced us all: Don, children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends.
Gwen loved the outdoors, being active, laughing, and teaching us all to be life-long healthy. Theatre and music and musicals. Shopping for the perfect clothing item for her children and grandchildren. Making capons and lots of really good vegetables for family gatherings. Books. Being well-dressed, poised and quietly lovely. Cottaging. Sending us postcards when she was on holiday; delivering glossy bags of beautifully-wrapped Christmas gifts. Florida. Sending her children and grandchildren to summer camp. Sedona. Keeping in touch and abreast, smiling sweetly at our foibles, preparing parcels with lots of Scotch tape. Sticking it out.
Gwen was a quiet modest woman with many friends who loved her dearly, above all Les Girls. She was an ever-caring, limitless wife, mother and grandmother. She made the very best sandwiches in the whole world. We all knew we relied on her; we know even more now.
We would like to express our deep appreciation to the guidance of Dr. Wells and the wonderful, wonderful people at Campbell House, staff and volunteers, who made this last week one of family connection and warmth as well as loss.
A loving farewell will take place at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, Ontario at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, 2017. In lieu of flowers, we hope you will make a donation to the Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood, Ontario.
