Condolences

Condolence From: Paul Caulford
Condolence: Mr Lachance thanx for the great experiences at Leaside High. Midget Basketball team. We almost got it done in that final. 1963. Overtime. You taught me so much that is positive, that is still with me. I have learned we don't often get to know what our life mission did for others who pass in and out of our lives. Please know you made positive impacts that helped me go forward. I think of you fondly. Thank you!

Condolence: Mr LaChance [he was never Bill to us, in class] was my Grade 9 Phys Ed teacher, in 1954; always pleasant and unassuming, he never appeared to be upset about anything, but he was quite professional.
I ran into him 3 years later on Bayview, and he remembered me. Since I wasn't a particularly good PE student in his class, I can only assume that he remembered ALL his students. In retrospect, that shouldn't have surprised me, because he was an extrovert who obviously cared.
He wanted to know what I was up to, and I mentioned the RCAF[res]. He knew my C/O Al Warrick and told me that I must say hello for him, at my first opportunity. That opening came quickly as I found myself on Al's carpet the following Monday. After my crime had been aired out [fairly], I went personal and passed on Bill's regards.
What a change in carpet atmosphere! Al couldn't say enough nice about Bill.
It seems that he lived his life that way until he was 92. That makes me very happy.

Condolence: We were sorry to learn of the passing of Bill and Gerry.

I fondly remember and often tell the story of my first conversation with Bill. I had called up to Collingwood to find out more about a 39 foot C&C. Through my conversation with Bill, it was obvious that he really loved, thoroughly enjoyed his boat and had had great fun and adventures with Sightseer III.

I had to ask, “Why are you selling it?”

“Well, I‘m 80”, was the response.

We greatly enjoyed meeting Bill and Gerry, hearing their stories, and think of them often when on Sightseer III.

Our condolences on your loss,

Chris and Sue Killey

Condolence: My heartfelt condolences to the LaChance family from a former student (1954-59). Bill taught me physical education, math and science. I will never forget our Grade XIII biology final class. As a 'reward' we got to eat fried grasshoppers and chocolate-coated ants. This did not deter me from becoming a science teacher.

Condolence: To The Lachance family-

I am so very saddened to hear that your father has recently passed away. Your mom and dad along with your entire family in Don Mills and at Craigleith provided some of my best memories growing up. You are all so special because of their personalities, opened mindedness, their sense of adventure and wonder for all people and the things that life had to offer. They sought out and shared unequivocally their views and opinions in the most gracious and giving of ways. I am honoured that I could have spent the hours with them and all of you growing up. It has been challenging for you all to have lost both of them - especially so close together- but they gave you all the glue of family to weather yet another storm of life. Your memories will keep them alive. You are blessed to have so many adventures together. So sorry i can t be there to share in the celebration of his life. Hugs. Nanci

Condolence: Dear family of Mr. LaChance:

I was a student at LHS from 1958 to 1963. Mr. LaChance was one of our favorite teachers. I was a skrawny kid and not much of an athlete but he never made me feel inferior and was always encouraging with his genuine warm, ever-present smile. I always looked forward to his Phys. Ed. and Health classes. I know the girls all wanted to be in his classes. He was a handsome man who exuded energy and drew out the best from his students. His teams flourished under his coaching. He effortlessly commanded respect. I don't think anyone ever gave him any trouble, not out of fear, just respect. I'm saddened that he is gone but happy to know he had a long, full life.

Sincerely,
Lloyd Mather-LHS '63

Condolence: A few months ago, my brothers and I were reminiscing about our childhood years. We focused on our years on Duncairn in Don Mills. One of my brothers wondered about your Mom and Dad. We remembered the many nights our parents would play bridge, while all of the kids played outside doing whatever it was that entertained us in those days. We remembered how much fun and what a great sense of humour your parents had. A couple of days later, I was so saddened to read of Gerry's passing and now today, to read about Bill's. On behalf of my 3 brothers, John, Pete and Steve and myself, please accept our sincerest condolences and assurance that your parents are happily reunited. Regards, Vicki Klugman McKee

Condolence: My condolences to the LaChance family and friends....I had the pleasure of being a student at Leaside High from 1960 - 65.... Mr. L aChance, as we knew him, was easily one of the most popular teachers of his time....one ALWAYS remembers certain teachers, some because you just hated them!, but others because they were great, and had a positive influence on you....Mr. LaChance certainly fit in the latter group. And I'll never forget, that one year, he failed my older brother in Phys. Ed.....my brother, Dick Krol, was the quarterback of the senior football team, and quite probably the best athlete at LHS at that time, but my brother fooled around in class (A LOT!), and got the failing mark he deserved....we all laughed,....my brother, not so much!
R.I.P, Mr. LaChance....

Condolence From: Lillian Wauthier
Condolence: Heartfelt condolences to the LaChance family...Jean, Alan, Billy, Deanie, Tony and Michele.
Your Dad was great, very much a Family man and although I usually saw Gerry more during all the years growing up in Don Mills, Bill was always so welcoming and friendly to me. I can still hear his voice every time he entered the house or came out of a room and saw me, exclaiming in a cheery voice "well hello Lil (or Lillian), how are you doing? Come on in, are you still waiting for Jeannie, sit down, do you want something to eat or drink?" Always acknowledging and paying attention to me. Often he was downstairs working with wood...a great woodsman/carpenter, always taking time to explain a technique or comment on something he was working on, always ready with a little joking banter with me.
He and Gerry had a good life together and especially enjoyed and indulged in their passion for sailing for many years. I always felt privileged to be made to feel a genuine part of the LaChance family; my life has been enriched for knowing all of them. Love to all. Lillian
